A tote bag with a flat bottom is not only stylish but also highly functional, offering more stability and space. If you're new to sewing or looking for a fun DIY project, this step - by - step guide will show you how to create your own flat - bottom tote bag.

Materials Needed

  • Fabric: Select a sturdy fabric such as cotton canvas, denim, or heavy - weight cotton. For a bag with dimensions of approximately 15 inches in height, 18 inches in width, and 5 inches in depth (you can adjust these according to your preference), you will need:

    • Two side pieces: Cut them 16.5 inches in length and 5.5 inches in width.

    • One bottom piece: Cut it 19.5 inches in length and 5.5 inches in width.

    • Two handle strips: Cut each 2 inches in width and 34 inches in length. If you want to add interfacing for extra strength, cut corresponding pieces for the handles and main bag body.

  • Sewing Tools: A sewing machine, thread (matching the color of your fabric), scissors, pins, iron, and measuring tape.

Step - by - Step Sewing Process

1. Prepare the Handles

  • Fold and iron the two long sides of each handle strip inwards towards the middle.

  • Then, fold the strip in half lengthwise and sew along the two long edges. If your fabric seems too flimsy, add fusible interfacing before folding, ironing, and sewing. This will give the handles more strength to hold the weight of the bag's contents.

2. Finish the Edges of the Main Pieces

  • Use a zigzag stitch, an overlock stitch (if you have an overlock presser foot for your regular sewing machine), or a serger to finish the edges of the two main pieces (the pieces that will form the front and back of the tote bag). This step helps prevent fraying and gives a neater finish.

3. Attach the Handles to the Main Pieces

  • Pin both ends of one handle strip to the long side on the right - side of one of the main pieces. Place the ends 2 to 3 inches from the edge, with the raw ends matching.

  • Repeat this step for the other handle and the other main piece.

  • Sew over the handles at the edge of the main piece. Reinforce the stitching by sewing back and forth a few times to ensure the handles are securely attached.

4. Prepare the Side and Bottom of the Tote Bag

  • Sew the two side pieces and the bottom piece together at the short ends. Place the pieces right - sides facing each other in the order: side piece - bottom piece - side piece. The width of this combined strip will determine the width of the bottom part of your tote bag.

  • Finish the edges of this long strip using the same method as for the main pieces (zigzag stitch, overlock, or serger) to prevent fraying.

5. Assemble the Tote Bag

  • Pin the long strip (made from the side and bottom pieces) to one of the main tote - bag pieces. Attach it to the three sides, with right - sides facing and matching the corners.

  • Sew along the three sides with a ⅜ - inch seam allowance. After sewing, fold the seams open and sew over them again. This double - stitching adds strength to the seams.

  • Pin the other main piece to the other side of the long strip, right - sides facing, and sew with a ⅜ - inch seam allowance. This creates the boxed corners of the bag, giving it a flat - bottomed shape without any complicated folds or excess fabric inside the bag.

6. Hem the Top Edge of the Tote Bag

  • Fold the top edge of the bag towards the inside twice, about ¾ inch each time, creating a double - folded hem. Fold the handles along with the hem and then fold them over the hem towards the outside of the bag.

  • Edgestitch all around the top of the bag at ⅛ inch from the edge. Then, add a second topstitching at ⅝ inch from the edge. Using an edge - joining foot can help you keep the ⅛ - inch stitching consistent along the edge, and a bulky - seam jumper can be useful when sewing over the handles and thick seams, especially if your sewing machine has difficulty with multiple layers of fabric.

7. Optional: Add Stiffening to the Bottom

  • If you want to make the bottom of the tote bag sturdier, you can cut a piece of plastic canvas or heavy - weight interfacing to the size of the bottom of the bag. Place it inside the bag at the bottom.

  • Another option is to make a rectangular base with batting and heavy - weight interfacing, covered with the same fabric as the bag. Sew this base to the inside bottom of the bag for added support.

With these steps, you now have a beautiful, functional tote bag with a flat bottom. You can customize it further by adding pockets, using different colors or patterns of fabric, or adding decorative elements like buttons or embroidery.
